Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake

Call me nostalgic but that wouldn’t move my obsession for Nyonya or Peranakan gastronomy. Apart from Babi Pongteh, Itik Tim and Cincalok, Nyonya Kueh is the single best picture of the Peranakan culture. Nyonya Kueh is the incarnation that brings the Peranakan cultures and traditions to life. Nyonya Kueh is fit for almost every meal of a day, breakfast, tea time, or as desserts. The colourful Nyonya Kueh pictured the vibrant colours of the Nyonya heritage. Craving for some sweet and savoury Nyonya Kueh? Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake is to die for.

Baba Charlie Cafe

Known for their authentic Nyonya cakes and treats, Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake is THE place to get your fix of Nyonya goodness. Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake started in 1988 in Melaka and was passed down by Baba Charlie’s grandmother. 32 years of Nyonya Kueh making, carved a name on everyone’s mind. “Think of Nyonya Kuih, Think of Baba Charlie.”

Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake moved into Baba Charlie Cafe which is just opposite the lane that leads to their renowned “red shop-house” where all the Nyonya Kueh were made. Push the door and you’ll be amazed by the aroma of coconut milk and gula Melaka swirling around you. They offer a wide variety of Nyonya Kueh that spoilt me with choices. Once inside, grab a plate and start choosing! “Hmmm....which one should I try this time”

It was my first time here since they moved in, so the whole place feels different for me. We handpicked some of our favourite cakes, ordered coffee, and dug in!

I had to say I couldn’t choose which was the best, but the Kuih Abu Sagu forced a ‘wow’ to escape from my mouth. The brown sugar and soft sagu put on a ballet show in my mouth. The fragrance was unquestionable. The Kuih Bingka Ubi was heavenly. *chef’s kiss* The outer part was baked and wrapped everything up perfectly. It’s soft, textured, and chewy, with a tinge of scent from the cassava and some coconut milk.
